Please join us for our next Beethoven and Beyond concert on January 12 at 2 PM.

The young Beethoven showcased virtuoso horn playing in his Sextet Op. 81b (c. 1795), writing to his publisher Simrock, ““Your father will probably still remember how I asked him about certain notes on the horn, and will notice that the former pupil now gives his master some hard nuts to crack.”

Acknowledging Beethoven as a major influence in his own quartet writing, Shostakovich composed Op. 110 (1960) with a dedication to the victims of fascism, embedding his own musical signature DSCH into this dark and moving cyclical work.

Inspired by the late quartets of Beethoven, 18-year-old Mendelssohn infused his Op. 13 (1827) with elements of Beethoven’s Op. 132 with its slow introduction, poignant themes, intense lyricism, and complex counterpoint.
