ADVENT THROUGH PRAYER AND CONTEMPLATION
Advent is a time of preparation, a time of expectation as we prepare for the final return of Jesus and the remembrance of his birth, the Light of the World. Traditionally, it has also been a time of solemn observance, of prayer and fasting and of deep devotion. The contrasts of excitement and solemnity are observed in the ancient practices of the church as it prepares for the advent of Jesus in its liturgy, readings and music. Symbolically, we prepare for the Coming of the Light with the Advent Wreath, lighting one small candle each week until all four are lit. In this way and in our liturgy and devotion we remind ourselves to take off those things we do not need and to wrap ourselves in the warmth of what is coming – the Light of the World – giving hope to a world so often enshrouded in darkness.
The members of the parish leadership team are initiating a special way of observing Advent this year with a morning of fasting, prayer and contemplation. On Tuesday mornings during Advent, we will gather in the King Room at 8 am for morning prayer, followed by a light communal breakfast and then, if so desired, a period of quiet contemplation using either the labyrinth or some other devotional form within the Anglican tradition.
The congregation who wish to join us in this observance of Advent is invited to contact Maria at the church office no later than 20 November (office@stpaulsanglican.bc.ca or 604-685-6832). We welcome all who wish to participate but will need to know numbers to find appropriate space and to purchase food for the breakfast. There will be a small session following the two services on the 20th to explain the form of the services and suggestions on private devotion.
