Retired Archbishop Douglas Hambidge was off to Africa last month with contributions of nearly $1,000 from the parish in which he is a member, All Saints, Ladner.
With little advance notice, the people of the parish were invited to contribute to the "Porridge Pot Project," set up by the the archbishop and his wife Denise Hambidge when the couple were in Africa ten years ago.
The money goes to a nursery attached to a school in Tanzania and pays for a nourishing breakfast of porridge each morning for the children, said the Rev. Carla McGhie, rector of All Saints.
"When we heard that Douglas was going to Tanzania, we offered to collect money for porridge once again. A huge porridge pot was made visible and the contributions began to flow in," said McGhie.
