Often, when we gather to celebrate a new ministry, the person whose new ministry we are celebrating will say to the congregation, “I invite you all to join with me in proclaiming the Gospel of hope and life.” To this invitation the congregation responds, “Amen. We have good news to share.”
We do have good news to share. We are members of a Christian tradition that opens its hands wide in compassion to those who are in any need or trouble. We are members of a Christian tradition that opens its heart in hope to the new possibilities that God is setting before us each day. We are members of a Christian tradition that opens its mind to explore all the wonders of creation.
Despite this good news there are many in our neighbourhoods who are a bit like Nathaniel, uncertain that the Christian community can offer any thing that is good (John 1.46a). What our neighbours need is a friend like Philip who is willing to meet Nathaniel’s skepticism with an invitation, “Come and see.” (John 1.46b)
People have many reasons for not participating in the life of the Christian community. Some of them have been members and, for one reason or another, no longer take part in the life of the Christian community. To help us reach out to these neighbours, we have a wonderful opportunity to meet Michael Harvey, one of the founders of ‘Back to Church Sunday’, on Saturday, April 27th at St. Dunstan's, Aldergrove, 9:30am (gathering) 10am-2:30pm (programme), and to learn from him about how to ‘unlock the growth’.
