A memorial service for the Rev. Canon Alfred H. Cummings was held on Thursday, Oct. 28, at St. Edward’s, 1011 Bird Road, Richmond.
After 35 years of service in the diocese, and a lengthy and active retirement, Cummings (often known as “Cap” from early days in the Church Army) died October 19 at age 93.
Coming from the Diocese of Brandon, he served as rector of at St. Philip’s, Vancouver, for 27 years, and then at St. Augustine’s, Marpole, for about ten years till he retired in 1978.
In retirement he was involved in an extensive seniors’ ministry at St. Matthias, Vancouver, and for a term was priest-in-charge of St. Edward’s, Richmond. Bishop Godfrey Gower made him a canon of the Cathedral Chapter in 1964.
He leaves his wife Jean, two children and a grandson. Clergy were requested not to robe for the service, but all guests are invited to wear something red, Cap’s favourite colour.
