Fifteen youth workers and clergy from around the diocese gathered on the morning of September 22nd at St. Matthias and St. Luke for a workshop introducing Mental Health First Aid. Led by a facilitator from the Canadian Mental Health Association, participants explored the processes for recognizing and responding with respect to mental health challenges in young people. They undertook a case study of a young person who arrives at youth group displaying unusual behavior and explored how to help the young person, as well as to help with the anxieties of the rest of the group.
The morning served as a valuable introduction to issues surrounding mental health and wellness. The Canadian Mental Health Association offers a full two day workshop on Mental Health First Aid; and other courses specifically aimed at those who work with young people. Phil Colvin the Diocesan Youth Coordinator has information and resources on mental health issues and young people.
