In early November 2019, the Reverend Paulina Lee, Rector of St. Chad’s, located in Vancouver’s Arbutus Bowl neighbourhood approached diocesan Director of Mission and Ministry Development, the Reverend Dr. Tellison Glover with a proposal. She proposed that the Diocese of New Westminster purchase a display advertisement in the publication of the Ecclesiastical Province of Hong Kong (proper name, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui) sharing information about worship available in Vancouver’s Anglican Church of Canada parishes in the two principal languages of Chinese language speakers: Mandarin and Cantonese.
Rev. Lee knew of an ad. in the aforementioned publication placed by the Anglican Diocese of Toronto and thought that this would be a ministry opportunity for the Diocese of New Westminster. Ministry to the Chinese-speaking populations of greater Toronto and greater Vancouver was the focus of a May 27, 2019 article in the Anglican Journal, “Chinese ministry grow, evolves in Vancouver and Toronto.”
The ad. which is seen here as an image with this post and also as a .PDF downloadable below was prepared by Reverend Lee with help from diocesan communications and then designed and produced by the Surrey-based advertising agency, StudioThink. The initial plan is to run the ad. in six issues of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui publication. The ad lists the two diocesan parishes that offer Chinese language worship; St. Chad’s and St. Matthias and St. Luke, with details about the specific liturgies communicated in Chinese. The two vertical lines of characters on the left translated read:
The text in blue at the bottom of the page encourages readers to visit the electronic sites of the two Vancouver parishes.
