Struthers elected board chair of deacons' group

Archbishop Andrew Hutchison, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, speaks with Amir Kazemian, who has been holed up at St. Michael's, Vancouver, since June, 2004, to avoid deportation to Iran where he feels his life would be in danger. Hutchison promised to take his case up with Canadian Immigration. In Vancouver the archbishop also spoke at St. Mary's Kerrisdale. Janet Morris photo

The Ven. John Struthers, Diocesan Director of Deacons and a deacon at St. David, Delta, was recently elected chair of the board of directors of the Association of Anglican Deacons in Canada. (John reminded TOPIC's editor that deacons wear stoles, not "slashes" as reported last month.)

Also inducted was the Rev. Christine Rowe, to the parish of St. Catherine, North Vancouver on Sunday, October 1. The preacher was her husband, the Rev. Stephen Rowe, rector of Church of the Epiphany and Regional Dean of South Fraser. (She preached at his induction last year.)

Barbara Anderson, a parishioner at St. John the Divine in Burnaby, four years ago took a software development course and created a simple database program for St. John's to keep their parish list, mailing labels and merged letters. Since then, she has developed version 2.0 of CIMS, the Church Information Management System. It's a "Made in Canada" product, and can be used by churches of all sizes. She's willing to offer it to other parishes and is at 604 437 0893 or agdd@shaw.ca.

St. Mark's, Ocean Park welcomed their new assistant priest, the Rev. Jonathan Blanchard, who began his duties in August. He and his family came from the Diocese of Moosonee.

Taking a turn with the lawnmower at St. Andrew's, Pender Harbour, is the Rev. Bob Korth, who with the Rev. Celia Howard is priest-in-charge of the parish on the Sunshine Coast. Behind him one can see a colourful mural on the church which the parish painted this summer to brighten up the building. David Dranchuk photo

Gail Newell of St. Anne's, Steveston, a recent graduate from the Vancouver School of Theology, has been appointed curate for Christ Church, Hope, effective in December. This is a three-year, half-time appointment. Gail will be ordained deacon on November 19 by Archbishop Douglas Hambidge in Christ Church, Hope.

Mike Burpee, chair of the Diocesan Task Force on Physical Resources, wants people to contact him and gave out his phone number at Diocesan Council last month. He then realized he had to give out a second one for after October 21. The reason: on that date he is marrying the Rev. Carla McGhie, priest-in-charge of St. Simon, Deep Cove.

Apologies to the Rev. Albert McLane, whose name was consistently spelled McLean in the last issue.

The Rev. Mark Greenaway-Robbins was inducted as the incumbent for the parish of St. James, Vancouver, by the Very Rev. Peter Elliott, the Commissary (acting bishop till Bishop Michael Ingham returns in December) on September 14 - Holy Cross Day. The preacher for the occasion was the Ven. Ronald Harrison, Executive Archdeacon. Elaine Jan photo
