Thursday, December 17, 2020, will be the first of what will become a monthly livestream event in support of Indigenous artists from Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. What began as one friend helping another friend with a rehearsal space and possibly a venue from which to stream a LIVE concert has grown into a monthly event. “Songs and Stories from St. John’s”
Since COVID-19, opportunities for artists to earn from their craft have become limited to non-existent. While we continue to have hope that life will eventually return to normal, it is clear that this is going to take some time. While we await re-openings, St. John’s Anglican Church in Shaughnessy has opened its doors to Indigenous artists as a practice space as well as a venue from which to livestream.
The first artist to take the stage is recognizable to regular visitors to Granville Island – Shawn Bullshields. Shawn’s roots are linked to the Blackfoot Nation in Northern Alberta. Shawn is completely self-taught and has a repertoire of songs as long as the day has minutes. Shawn has become a recognized figure around Vancouver as prior to the COVID outbreak, Shawn was a full-time busker at Granville Island. Shawn puts his heart into every song and punctuates his performances with emotional and humorous stories of his experiences growing up.
