Bishop Skelton is pleased to announce her appointment of Mr Brander McDonald as the Indigenous Justice Ministries Coordinator for the Diocese of New Westminster. The position was created to assist the Diocese to continue its work of both restoring and building new relationships with the Indigenous Community. The renewed engagement created by the Truth and Reconciliation Event in Vancouver in September 2013 highlighted the need and the desire for relationships to be developed and strengthened through dialogue and education.
Brander is a member of the Cree Nation, Peguis Band. He was born in Winnipeg, MB and raised in BC. Brander brings a wealth of experience to the position. He has worked in cultural education in secondary schools, in First Nations communities, in correctional centres, as a cross cultural communications consultant and currently as the Indigenous Relations Coordinator with the Mennonite Church of BC/Canada. Additionally he has worked as a therapist, musician artist, hockey coach and youth worker. His formal education includes degrees and diplomas in Psychology, Fine Arts, Music, Counselling and Digital Audio Recording Engineering.
Brander will begin his work with the Diocese on 1 November 2014.
