On Tuesday of Holy Week, April 4, 2023, approximately 80 vested and unvested clergy with 40 lay people gathered at Christ Church Cathedral for the Chrism Mass. This is the Celebration of Holy Eucharist with Reaffirmation of Baptismal and Ordination Vows and Blessing of Holy Oils. For 2023 there were two additional components, the collation of two archdeacons and the receipt of Christ Church Cathedral's Prayer Pole.
Following the post liturgy lunch, Bishop Alexander presented a 30 minute lecture entitled "Liturgy in Times of Social Stress."
The preacher was the Cathedral's guest speaker and preacher for Holy Week 2023 Bishop J. Neil Alexander.
Bishop J. Neil Alexander is Dean, Professor of Liturgy, and Quintard Professor of Theology, Emeritus, of the School of Theology at the University of the South at Sewanee.
From 2001 to 2012 he was Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. Prior to serving as Bishop of Atlanta, he was the Norma and Olin Mills Professor of Divinity in the School of Theology of the University of the South, the Trinity Church Professor of Liturgics and Preaching at The General Theological Seminary in New York, and has taught at Wilfrid Laurier, Yale, Drew, and Emory Universities.
He is the author of numerous publications in the fields of liturgy, sacramental theology, homiletics, and pastoral theology. The 80th General Convention of The Episcopal Church appointed him to be the Custodian of the Book of Common Prayer.
