Chaplains are clergy, and trained lay people, who serve as religious and spiritual leaders and pastors in secular institutions including hospitals, prisons, military units, and schools. Their work can include offering worship services, building community among or across groups within an institution, and providing one-on-one pastoral care. Chaplains may be hired by a secular organization or appointed by a religious body, usually in partnership with a secular organization.
The Diocese of New Westminster currently supports chaplains in hospital and care home settings, as well as a Chaplain to college and university students. Additionally, the Diocese supports the work of the Mission to Seafarers which offers chaplaincy services to sailors at our local ports.
